What does CLEAN BEAUTY really mean?
In honor of June’s new role as Clean Beauty Awareness Month, here’s what it means to me and Pour Moi…
(It’s a 3-minute read)
If you google “what makes something clean beauty” the world’s smartest search engine tells the following: Clean beauty means that a product is safe, non-toxic, and has transparent labeling of ingredients. Just because a product is organic, natural, or green, doesn’t mean it’s non-toxic. The FDA doesn’t regulate or define claims often used in greenwashed products.
Well, it sounds amazing but here is the problem: The FDA doesn’t regulate or even define what clean beauty is…so, there is no doubt that “clean beauty” has been a big opportunity for greenwashing. That’s why it is important to know exactly what the term clean beauty means for the skincare you’re using.
US cosmetic regulation for safe products is over 80 years old. And a lot has changed since then.
While cosmetic registration with the FDA is voluntary for beauty products, it’s strictly mandatory in other countries. That means if there’s a safety issue with a product, FDA can only recall it if it has been voluntarily registered. I believe this needs to change and FDA registration is mandatory.
For me & Pour Moi, clean beauty means the following:
The skincare company and all products have to have a valid FDA registration; 100% transparency of what’s in the formulas and what’s excluded; 100% transparency of where the products are made and who formulates and produces them; and what materials are used for packaging. ONLY when this information is true and public, do I believe a brand qualifies as a clean beauty brand. Pour Moi is a clean beauty brand!
